The 5,000 rule
Multiply the unit's age by the repair cost. Under $5,000, repair. Over, seriously consider replacement. A $700 repair on a 9-year-old unit (6,300) is borderline; on a 5-year-old (3,500) it's an easy repair.
Refrigerant type
R-22 was phased out and is very expensive. If an R-22 system needs refrigerant, replacement is usually the smarter money.
